W.Heath Robinson at the Walker Art gallery, Liverpool

A typical example of the humourous pen and ink illustration by W. Heath Robinson, although this particular drawing wasn't in the fine exhibition we saw yesterday. You can access more examples at www.walkerartgallery.org
Also we saw an exhibition of puppets in the museum next door (Liverpool Museum?) which had a massive TV showing clip of old puppet shows from the 50's and 60's including Thunderbirds, Andy Pandy, Stingray and the inspiration of this blog, The Flowerpot Men.

For those of you ( americans etc. ) who have no idea who the Flowerpot men were, a brief description is probably needed. They were on a childrens puppet show that was on every week during the late 50's and 60's. About twenty programmes ( 10 minutes each) were endlessly shown on a loop along with Rag, tag and Bobtail, The Woodentops, Andy pandy and Picture Book, for 5 days a week. They were in black and white and the made very cheaply. the voices were done by a wonderful chap called peter hawkins who did voices for lots of childrens tv. (Billy bean, Capt. Pugwash etc. see www.whirlygig.co.uk ) and "flobberlob" was the strange language they spoke. Thats what it sounded like anyway. "Ooh, flib flob dob alob plib!" etc. which the Telly Tubbies have shamelessly copied to a certain extent!
