Bric-a-brac = Flop-a-lop

Only three stalls at the much touted Bric-a-brac market in Winsford. I had to endure a bumpy 35 minute bus ride through villages I'd never heard of to get there in the drizzle. I did get a few things though, so not a completely wasted excursion. Two CD's reduced in a sale. This Marx Bros. compilation of old radio show fragments (pictured) and one of Shirley Temples archive recordings ( Animal Crackers ). In a charity shop I found a Leo De Lyon record on the Gallo label, recorded in South Africa. He's obviously never heard of Apartheid! On the sleeve it states- "Besides playing the piano for the Whole Session, Leo De Lyon creates the sounds of Trumpet, trombone, bass-trombone, "Slam-Stewart" bass and french horn." Not quite sure how he does this but will listen to the record later and find out. If any good will add some to Boot Sale Sounds yahoo group at some point.

Marx Brothers, eh? Envy, envy.

By coincidence - you'll be receiving some pages for Floss 2 soon - which features one of the Marx Brothers. I wonder if you can guess which one.

Is it Flossie Marx the little known Marx sister?
The CD sounds very firmiliar to me so I might have it already. It has the Dr. Hackenbush song and a silly Cowboy Stars take-off? I'll check the tapes i have of old marx Bros. stuff and if i have it I'll send it with last 3 episodes of Hitch hikers.
The Leo De Lyon record is mildly amusing with songs like Laura and Unchained Melody partly sung and hummed in a mixture of japanese and kazoo-like burps with a perforated lip impediment. Not quite up to Spike Jones standard though alas.
I will add some to Boot Sale Sounds if I get a chance tomorrow.

Not Flossie. Not her Italian Uncle Toppo. Or, come to that, her English cousin Chalky.

Not a wasted day at all, Michael!
And a bit of site-seeing is good,
even on a bumpy old bus.
Maybe the new bric-a-brak (?)
will grow...water it well.

Winsford is not a very attractive town unfortunalty, one might even say it was ugly! Its heart has been ripped out and a hideous pedestrian shopping complex has been plonked right in the middle of the town replacing the quaint old shops and cobbled streets you can see in old postcards and photographs. The market hall is part of all this mess, surrounded by skips and rubbish bins and access roads etc. Northwich suffered a similar fate but thankfully the majority of the town has been spared the disaster that befell Winsford.
I doubt if I shall be suffering such a journey again to look at three stalls of tat! The pre-xmas charity market at the local market hall is always good and packed with stalls of goodies but will have to wait until November for that.

Do you indulge in dumpster diving? I've only done it a couple of times (when I spotted an absolutely amazing thing in the trash--a huge roll of stickers comes to mind) but I have several friends who do it quite regularly and come away with amazing treasures. Once there was a pile of blank envelopes with postage affixed! Whoa. Goldmine!

Are dumpsters the things we call "skips" over here? If thats the case then yes, I do ocassionally poke my head into skips to see if they have thrown out anything useful. I found some old encyclopedias recently - good for collage.
